Two of last year’s New York state champions kicked off their seasons together when CHSAA AAA winner Chaminade hosted Class A champion Ward Melville on March 22.
Coming off an undefeated season, Melville, who finished as the top team in the country last year, ranked 2nd going into this season in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings. Not far behind, Chaminade sat in 12th nationally.
Making a statement early in the season, the Flyers defeated Ward Melville 10-5, handing the Patriots their first defeat in almost two years.
Wasting no time in getting started, Chaminade jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Showing no signs of slowing down, the Flyers took a 7-1 lead into the half. Ward Melville managed to catch up a bit in the second half; however Chaminade had full control of the game.
Chaminade’s seniors stepped up to the leadership positions, filling the gaps from last season’s graduates who led the Flyers to a 15-2 record. Sean Cerrone led the Flyers with three goals and two assists. Sam Bonafede added on two goals.
The Flyers’ juniors also stepped up. Jack Brennan scored two goals and Jack Tigh followed up with a goal and two assists.
With its first win under its belt, Chaminade looks to keep its momentum going against 33rd ranked Massapequa. The Flyers host Massapequa on March 26.
