After four consecutive losses to St. Anthony’s in the Class AA CHSAA championship game, Chaminade reclaimed the prize on Thursday in a 7-5 victory over their Suffolk rivals on May 23.
The St. Anthony’s Friars went into the game with four straight titles. Prior to that, Chaminade claimed four championships from 2005 to 2008.
In the past two years, the Chaminade Flyers dominated in the regular season, winning both matchups in their meetings with the Friars. In the championship final, however, St. Anthony’s always stepped up to the occasion and defeated Chaminade.
This year, the Flyers had other plans. After an impressive 14-2 season, Chaminade claimed the 8th rank in DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings. At 11-4, St. Anthony’s sit in the 17th rank on the national scale.
In both regular season meetings between the teams, Chaminade defeated the Friars in two close games. The previous two years showed that St. Anthony’s is difficult to beat three times.
St. Anthony’s jumped out to a quick start, marking two early goals. Then with 6:40 left in the first quarter, Brian Pratt netted his first of three goals which put the Flyers on a five goal streak into the third quarter. Then, the Friars responded with two more goals in the third and Chaminade closed the quarter with a goal. Going into the final period, Chaminade led 6-4. Both teams struck the net once in the fourth to end the game at 7-5 for Chaminade.
The Flyers’ power started with goalie Dan Fowler who made ten crucial saves throughout the game. Brian Pratt led the team with three goals, and Ryan Lukacovic added a goal and three assists. The defense kept St. Anthony’s from gaining any sort of momentum, never letting the Friars score more than two consecutive goals.
After four long years without a championship, the Flyers have final delivered a response to St. Anthony’s. With the power back on their side, Chaminade looks to continue their excellent play into next season.
Throughout the year, Chaminade always performed well, and ended the season with a well deserved championship trophy.
